Thalay La Trek: Discover One of Baltistan’s Most Beautiful Hidden Passes

Thalay la trek

Far from the busy trekking routes of the Baltoro and K2 Base Camp, there is another side of the Karakoram that few international trekkers get to experience.

The Thalay La Trek takes you across a high mountain pass between the valleys of Khaplu and Shigar, through green alpine meadows, traditional Balti settlements, shepherd camps and some spectacular mountain scenery. At 4,572 metres, Thalay La is high enough to feel like a genuine Himalayan adventure, yet the route does not require technical climbing or glacier travel under normal conditions.

This is precisely what makes the trek special.

You get the remote landscapes and high mountain experience of the Karakoram without committing to the longer and more demanding logistics of routes such as K2 Base Camp, Snow Lake or Gondogoro La.

And perhaps most importantly, you get to experience Baltistan beyond its famous mountain names.

Day 4: Skardu to Khaplu and Thalay Valley

After breakfast, drive east from Skardu towards Khaplu, following the Shyok River through the spectacular landscapes of Baltistan.

Khaplu is one of the most beautiful historic valleys in the region and is famous for its traditional Balti culture, orchards and historic Khaplu Palace.

From Khaplu, continue towards Thalay Valley. Depending on road and trail conditions, the jeep can take us towards the trekking starting point and Thalay Broq.

Set up camp in the beautiful alpine surroundings and enjoy your first night in the mountains.

Overnight: Thalay Broq.

Day 5: Thalay Broq to Dubla Khan

Altitude: Approximately 3,700 m
Trekking: 3 to 5 hours

Today the actual trek begins.

We follow the Thalay Valley through broad green meadows, seasonal shepherd settlements and grazing areas. During summer, the valley is covered with wildflowers and crossed by clear mountain streams.

The scenery becomes more dramatic as we gain altitude, with increasingly impressive views of the surrounding Karakoram.

We arrive at Dubla Khan in the afternoon and set up camp. There is time to explore the surrounding meadows and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Overnight: Dubla Khan.

Day 6: Dubla Khan to Thalay La High Camp

Altitude: Approximately 4,180 m

Accommodation: Camping

Today’s walk is shorter but involves a steady climb towards the high camp below Thalay La.

The landscape becomes more rugged as we leave the lower pastures behind. We continue alongside streams and across rocky alpine terrain towards our camp beneath the pass.

Reaching high camp relatively early gives us time to rest and acclimatize before the pass crossing.

Your guide will assess weather and trail conditions and brief the group about the next day’s crossing.

Overnight: Thalay La High Camp.

Day 7: Cross Thalay La Pass to the Shigar Valley

Highest point: 4,572 m
Trekking: Approximately 6 to 8 hours
Accommodation: Camping

This is the highlight of the trek.

We start early in the morning for the climb to Thalay La Pass at 4,572 metres. The ascent becomes steeper as we approach the pass, and depending on the season there may be snow around the upper section.

After reaching the top, take time to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding Karakoram mountains.

Standing at Thalay La, you can look back towards the Thalay and Khaplu side and ahead towards the Shigar Valley.

After celebrating the crossing, we begin the long descent towards the Shigar side. The trail eventually reaches the open alpine pastures around Deserpa.

The descent can be tiring, but the changing landscape provides a spectacular finish to the most challenging day of the trek.

Overnight: Deserpa/Shigar side camp.

Day 8: Deserpa to Shigar Valley

Trekking: Approximately 4 to 5 hours
Accommodation: Hotel / Shigar Fort

Today we continue descending through the Bauma Lungma towards Shigar Valley.

The landscape gradually changes from high alpine terrain to greener valley surroundings. Eventually we reach the roadhead, where our vehicle will meet the group.

Drive to Shigar and check into your accommodation.

After several nights under canvas, this is a chance to relax, enjoy a hot shower and celebrate completing Thalay La.

Depending on the itinerary, we can also visit Shigar Fort, the historic royal residence that now operates as a heritage hotel.

The 4,572 m pass elevation and the broad Khaplu to Shigar route are consistently supported across the trekking sources I checked. The precise intermediate camps can vary because local teams adjust the route according to trail, snow and weather conditions.

For your website, I would position this as a 4-day wilderness trek within an 11-day Pakistan journey, rather than simply calling it an 11-day trek. It makes the product much easier for international travellers to understand and puts the actual mountain experience front and centre.

Best time for the Thalay La Trek

The main trekking season is during the warmer months, generally from June through September, although exact conditions vary from year to year. Several operators list June to September as the main trekking window.

Summer is particularly attractive because the lower valleys and alpine meadows are at their greenest, and wildflowers can cover sections of the trail.

July and August are generally a good choice for travellers looking for greener landscapes and more reliable trekking conditions, although weather and snow conditions at the pass still need to be assessed locally.

As with any high-altitude trek in Pakistan, the final itinerary should remain flexible enough to adapt to weather and trail conditions.

Thalay La or K2 Base Camp?

This is a question we often hear from trekkers choosing their next adventure in Pakistan.

The answer depends on what you are looking for.

K2 Base Camp is the obvious choice for someone who wants to stand beneath some of the world’s most famous mountains and experience the legendary Baltoro Glacier.

Thalay La is different.

It is quieter, shorter and much more focused on the valleys, communities and landscapes of Baltistan. There are no enormous crowds, no long glacier approach and none of the expedition atmosphere that comes with the K2 region.

Instead, the experience is about walking through remote valleys, crossing a high pass and seeing a side of the Karakoram that most visitors never experience.

For travellers who want something less conventional, that can be even more rewarding.

Why trek Thalay La with Broad Peak Adventures?

At Broad Peak Adventures, we believe that Pakistan’s mountains have much more to offer than the famous routes.

Thalay La is exactly the kind of trek we love to organise.

Our local team knows the valleys, the communities and the changing mountain conditions. We work with local guides, porters and support teams, allowing the journey to benefit the communities that call these mountains home.

We also understand that every trekking group is different.

Some travellers want a challenging adventure with long walking days. Others want to take their time, photograph the landscape and experience village life. A local team allows the itinerary to be adapted around the group’s fitness, weather and trail conditions.

Most importantly, we want you to experience the Karakoram properly.

Not simply pass through it.

Is Thalay La worth visiting?

Absolutely.

Thalay La may not have the international fame of K2 Base Camp or Gondogoro La, but that is part of its appeal.

You cross a high mountain pass, camp beneath huge peaks, walk through flower-filled alpine meadows, meet shepherds, pass traditional settlements and experience two of Baltistan’s most beautiful valleys.

There is no need for technical climbing.

There is no glacier crossing on the standard route.

And there are no crowds around every corner.

Just a remote trail through one of the most spectacular mountain regions on earth.

For travellers looking for an authentic, quieter Karakoram trekking experience, the Thalay La Trek deserves a place near the top of the list.
