TWO ADVENTURES,
ONE WILD VALLEY

Tucked away in the Testay Valley near Askole — the famous starting point for K2 Base Camp — lies one of the Karakoram's most rewarding and least-visited adventures. Skoro Peak (6,130m) is a new and rarely climbed 6,000m trekking peak, still largely undiscovered by the international trekking community. Only a handful of expeditions have reached its summit — making this a genuine first-experience peak where you won't share the mountain with anyone. The Skoro La Pass (5,073m), crossing from the Shigar Valley to the Braldu Valley, is one of the oldest mountain passes in the region — first crossed in 1838 and used for centuries by Balti traders and herders long before roads reached Askole.

We offer this adventure two ways: the Skoro La Pass Trek ($1,400) for fit trekkers who want the full wilderness experience and historic pass crossing; and the Skoro Peak Expedition ($2,500) which adds an optional non-technical summit push to 6,130m along the ridge — one of the most accessible 6,000m summits in all of Pakistan. Both routes share the same beautiful base camp, the same warm Balti crew, and the same untouched Karakoram scenery that has no parallel on the more crowded routes.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL

EasyModerateChallenging ◄HardExtreme

Rated Moderate to Strenuous (Challenging). You need solid fitness and stamina for 5–8 hours of daily trekking on snow and rock at altitude. The route is entirely non-technical — no fixed ropes, harnesses or climbing certification required. Crampons and an ice axe are carried for safety on the pass and optional summit. Prior high-altitude trekking experience above 3,500m is recommended. As a new and rarely climbed peak, Skoro is one of the few remaining 6,000m summits in Pakistan where you can still be among the very first international trekkers to reach the top.

10-DAY ITINERARY

Flexible for weather and acclimatisation. The expedition builds naturally — buffer days can be added between any stage and the full programme typically runs 10–12 days. Click any day to expand.

Meet at the airport, transfer to your hotel, gear check and a relaxed expedition briefing over dinner. A comfortable start before the mountains begin.
  • Accommodation: Hotel, Islamabad
  • Meals: Dinner
Scenic 45-minute flight over the Karakoram — views of Nanga Parbat and beyond if skies are clear. Spend the afternoon in Skardu adjusting to the altitude: walk the bazaar, visit Kharpocho Fort or simply rest. Road backup via Karakoram Highway if the flight is cancelled.
  • Accommodation: Hotel, Skardu
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A beautiful jeep ride through the Shigar Valley to the trailhead village of Tastey. Meet the full crew — guide, assistant guides, cook and porter team — sort final logistics and rest. The Testay Valley opens up above, with the first views of the mountains that await.
  • Accommodation: Camp or simple guesthouse, Tastey Village
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A gentle introduction — walking uphill beside clear streams and through green meadows full of wildflowers. The Karakoram begins to reveal itself as the valley opens. Set up camp in the peaceful Tastey Meadows for the night beneath a wide mountain sky.
  • Accommodation: Full-service camping
  • Meals: All meals
The trail climbs steadily with increasingly dramatic glacier and peak views. As you approach the Skoro La Glacier, the terrain transitions from pasture to rock and moraine. Base camp sits at the glacier's edge — a spectacular perch with the pass and peak visible above. The full crew settles in for a couple of nights.
  • Accommodation: Full-service camping, Skoro Base Camp
  • Meals: All meals
  • Altitude: 3,700–4,000m
A vital rest day. Short walks around camp help your body adjust to the altitude. Optional light scramble to a nearby viewpoint if you feel strong. Eat well, hydrate, and prepare mentally and physically for the pass day ahead. Solar charging in the mess tent — your last reliable power before the push.
  • Accommodation: Full-service camping, Skoro Base Camp
  • Meals: All meals
The centrepiece of the trek. We climb steadily on snow and ice to reach the top of Skoro La — a mountain pass with centuries of history and a panorama that rewards every step. The Karakoram opens up in every direction from the col; on a clear day you may glimpse the distant Baltoro peaks. Descend carefully on the far side to a camp in the lower valley near Darso Brok or Churkah Broq.
  • Accommodation: Full-service camping, lower valley
  • Meals: All meals
  • Altitude: 5,073m max
  • Gear: Crampons and ice axe required for the pass
For the Skoro Peak Expedition only. If the group is strong and conditions are right, we make an early start for the non-technical ridge to the summit of Skoro Peak at 6,130m — 4 to 6 hours round-trip from a high point near the pass. The route follows the ridge on snow and rock; no fixed ropes required. The views from the top — across the Karakoram, the Testay Valley below and toward the Baltoro in the distance — make every step worth it. Afterward, drop back down to a lower camp to rest and celebrate.
  • Accommodation: Full-service camping
  • Meals: All meals
  • Note: Skip day available if conditions or fitness dictate — no pressure
A relaxed morning walk through small hamlets and along streams brings you to the jeep track. Say farewell to the porter team. Drive back to Skardu for a hot shower, a proper meal and a celebration dinner. Your first proper bed in a week.
  • Accommodation: Hotel, Skardu
  • Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Morning flight from Skardu to Islamabad. Transfer to the airport for your international connection — or use an extra day if flights are delayed (buffer days always built into the schedule). You leave with Skoro La crossed, a 6,130m summit in your pocket, and the wild Karakoram behind you.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Note: Extra days in Skardu or Shigar available for cultural stops if desired

Skoro La (also known as Skoro Pass) is a high mountain pass at approximately 5,050–5,073m connecting the Shigar Valley to the Braldu Valley in Baltistan. It was first crossed by European explorers in 1838 and was used for centuries as a trading route before modern roads reached Askole. It remains one of the less-visited but most historically rich mountain passes in the entire Karakoram.

Yes — crampons and an ice axe are recommended for safety on the snow and ice on the pass and during the optional summit push. If you don't own them, Broad Peak Adventures can arrange rentals from Skardu. You do not need to be experienced in using them technically — your guide will instruct you on basic crampon use before the pass day.
The itinerary is designed with gradual altitude gain — each day moves you up in manageable steps. A full acclimatisation rest day at base camp (4,000m) is built in before the pass day. Our guides monitor symptoms and carry a comprehensive first aid kit and satellite phone. Trekkers are advised to consult a doctor about Diamox before departure. Travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation to 6,500m is mandatory.
